Standard Based Grading
Standard based grading enables teachers to grade students using meaningful standards like “Developing”, “Achieving” etc instead of using scores like 100%, A, etc. Working closely with the Head of design of Toddle, I drove the design of this model from conception to validation, execution and launch.

Problem
Toddle lacked a system to grade using standards. Our grading system was built around scores, not standards.
Approach
We aimed to provide an entire system built into the existing architecture. In order to do this, we drew an architecture map of the system and saw where were the gaps we need to fill We built

Standard Creation Experience
Experience for admins to create standards like reading and writing skills and map them to grade scales like A-E. We used AI to speed up this workflow for admins

Calculation methods
For admins to decide how they want to caluclate the grades from the standards

Creating rubric templates for teachers
Using details of the skill like reading and the grade scale it was mapped to like A-E, we used AI to help admins write custom descriptors for each rubric, outlining what A means for a reading or what C means for writing to help teachers better understand how to grade students

Creating and grading assignments with the standards
We created an AI workflow for teachers to help create assignments tailored to particular standards and help them grade students

Using gradebook and analytics to view student history and performance
We introduced a new gradebook to see overall grades for the standards graded in the course and help teachers view students how need help and those that were doing well and provide actionable insights for them
